The word “burlesque” may have come from the Latin, the French, the Italian or the Spanish languages but no one seems to be certain of it. “Burlesque” literally means “trifle.” Most historians, however, agree that “burlesque” is directly traceable to folk poetry and the theater.

In the 20th century U.S.A., it has come to refer to variety show where striptease is included. So, although beautiful and sexy, burlesque dancer have been considered unwholesome performers who wear provocative clothing which also often comes off on stage.
